GOD gives special kids to special parents. There is help for you and support when you are willing to accept it. It is hard in the beginning but there is hope! To those that are curious about those with Down syndrome there are a lot of things that we can learn that we have lost along the way. Some of the things that my 2 year old has reminded me of is unconditional love and how to let things go and not hold a grudge. Let's learn together.*Literature: We have different information for those interested about Down syndrome. There are facts/myths sheets, brochures about our organization, Dental care, and more. We try to keep only updated information. *Awareness/Education: We are going into our community to help spread awareness anyway that we can. We have went on T.V. with WSRE to promote Down syndrome. Our church's motorcycle ministry began our 1st Annual Bike Run in October of 2009. There are numerous expos that we set up booths to explain what we are doing in our community for Down syndrome. In April of 2010 we were asked to go on WRNE 980AM to talk about the group. There are many ways that we are getting the word out there to support our family and friends.*Local speakers: We have a monthly support group meeting held on the 3rd Thursday of every month at our church My Father's Vineyard from 5:30pm - 7:00pm. Each month there is a different speaker from our community that shares what their agency is doing or personal testimonies of overcoming in a society that is constantly against them.*Workshops: We have started hosting our own workshops to understand Down syndrome. When available we partner with Early Steps to collaborate dates to combine our group's monthly meeting with a workshop that they are holding. The topics range from Potty training, Behavioral, Sign Language and the list goes on. UPside2Downs is also hosting their own workshops that are available for the community to understand what it is like to have Down syndrome.*Playgroups: We are in the process of having a dear friend of ours train and be educated on how to lead a playgroup for our children. I am excited to get our first Playgroup date, but for now it is still under progress.FeedbackWhat they are saying about UPside2DownsWith this article, we're going to get away from Pensacola Real Estate and look at a great organization that is doing a lot of good in our Pensacola community. I am truly grateful to the Gilliards for all they do to make life better for those beautiful souls that are facing the challenges of Down syndrome. So go see a hockey game and support a good cause. And if you are not into hockey, just be aware of these beautiful people in our community who are working so hard to make the world a better place and lend them your support if you so desire.
